Who am I?

My name is Gary Crilley, and my career as a graphic designer spans an era that predates the rise of desktop computers, the Internet, and artificial intelligence. I have witnessed—and actively participated in—the design world’s dramatic evolution over several decades.

Early Days and Embracing Technology

In 1990, I started calling myself a ‘Computer’ Graphic Designer after realising how much these early personal computers—those familiar beige boxes—could simplify many routine design tasks. This key moment marked the start of my ongoing journey adapting to technological changes in the industry.

Professional Experience

Throughout my career, I have worked across agencies and large corporations, as well as independently as a freelance designer. My roles have ranged from practical design work to leadership positions, including serving as the production and design manager for five newspapers and several magazines. My experience also includes teaching graphic design at tertiary level and running evening classes in key creative software such as Photoshop, InDesign, Freehand, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver.

Writing and Online Presence

In 2004, I published my first book on digital design. To promote this work online, I taught myself HTML and web design, which led to the launch of my first website later that year. My passion for sharing knowledge has driven me to publish additional books on topics such as Graphic Design, Logo Creation, and Photoshop Skills. (And trail running!)

Personal Life

A husband, father and grandfather, my extracurricular activities include writing, mountain biking and trail running. Especially trail running. I've combined two disparate hobbies by writing a book on trail running. My photos may reflect this, as an image of some old dude at a computer is nothing to write home about.
