FAQ

For the curious. And for those who want to know more, contact me.

Where are you based?

I live in Kapiti, and my client base is primarily between Levin and Wellington. However, I do have this handy little tool called the Internet, and occasionally have clients in Australia, the USA and the UK.

What do you do?

Pretty much anything design-based: print, web, video, packaging, sign design, or words. But if I feel something might be beyond my capabilities, I have a broad selection of compatible professionals to subcontract to. I will still be your project manager – your one-stop contact.

Are you expensive?

I hope not. I’m not ‘Facebook ad $5 website’ cheap, but to put things in perspective, my hourly rate is currently lower than it was in 2010. If cost is a factor, I can work to a budget, or we can discuss a rolling delivery over a coffee.

How long have you been doing this?

Since time began.

Well, off and on since the ‘80s. I won first prize in an international magazine digital illustration competition in 1994, an Australasian-wide design award in 1995, a Pride-in-Print award in 2004, and designed my first website in 2004. I may not be 23 anymore, but I can offer you the benefit of all the mistakes I’ve made over the years (apparently, you can learn from them).

Are you fast?

I’m experienced, which means I’ve learned all the shortcuts. But I’m one man: if your job requires 70 hours of work and you want it by Friday, I can maybe point you to a few large agencies that have a better chance of delivery.

Do you use AI?

Everybody uses AI. Have you ever searched for something on Google? But if it came to writing a prompt in ChatGPT to design your new logo, then charging you thousands for the work, the answer is no. I’m an analogue designer who occasionally uses the powerful new AI tools in apps like Photoshop to shorten the time it takes to get the desired result. We both win.

What do you charge for building a website?

Between $1000 and $100,000. How much is a car? The average, however, sits around $5k – $10k. If price is your only consideration, perhaps learn to use Wix or Squarespace and build it yourself.

Note: I spoke to the CEO of a small company a couple of years ago who did just that, and in the end, he spent almost two weeks on the project. He confessed that it probably cost him more than $12,000 in valuable time, and the result was disappointing. I suggest we discuss it over coffee.

Do you use WordPress?

No.

Do you do social media?

No. At least, not the posting, boosting and advertising components. That’s a specialist service in itself and very time-consuming. But I do design and create graphics, banners, videos and animations for your social media channels.

Not sure exactly what you need?

Get in touch, and we can chat about your situation over a coffee*. I offer a free assessment, and I might even confess that you're perfect as you are – you may not need my help at all.
* doesn't have to be coffee
