Case Studies

Here are a few interesting projects I've been involved with over the years

Hitchy's Burger Brand

In 2006, I was lucky enough to be engaged to brand an entire burger chain. This new chain was going to take on McDonalds and Burger King with outlets in all the major food courts.

As a common theme among food outlets seemed to be red-orange-yellow, and my brief was for Hitchy's to STAND OUT, I decided to go blue.

The owners already had leases on shops in Queensgate and North City Plaza, and were negotiating for a spot in the Upper Hutt Mall. It was a rush job, but the Lower Hutt and Porirua outlets opened on time with no holdups from my end.

Unfortunately, Mcdonald's and Burger King have been at this game a very long time, and my clients, although giving it the good kiwi mahi, didn't last long.

Shame. It would have been interesting to see my branding, shop fronts, menus and posters spread around the world.

Isis Cosmetics Brand

It was 2007, and Isis was still the Egyptian protector and goddess of magic. Isis was also a Lower Hutt company that produced organic cosmetic and beauty products. My brief was to create a pictorial logo and brand their packaging and point-of-sale.

To fulfil the logo component, I drew a beautiful goddess and gave her wings (which had nothing to do with the original goddess but which I thought was more apt, and the client agreed).

As the work progressed, I became an expert in barcodes. The ECAN barcode rulebook was 72 pages long, and I soon discovered that the minimum size of a barcode was considerably larger than the lipstick packaging we had created!

The Hummer Bar

An American climbed out of a Hummer one day, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and a big grin. He'd just bought a local pub and he wanted me to brand it for him. The only guidelines he gave me were 'Jimmy Buffett' and 'Margaritaville'.

Wedgelock Equipment Ltd

In 2014, I got a real job and took a salaried position four days a week at Wedgelock in Upper Hutt. My duties included rebranding the company, building a new website, creating brochures, sales material, instruction manuals and videos, and doing some 3D rendering and explanatory animations.
